Online 404 multiplayer is co-op for up to four players, solo or in a team, with in-game chat. Steam also tags it Massively Multiplayer, which is unexplained.
Online 404 Multiplayer: How Many Players Can You Play With?
Online 404 multiplayer is co-op for a small group: the developer describes playing "solo or in a team of up to four players", and the Steam feature list backs that up with single-player, multiplayer, co-op and online co-op tags all enabled. The wrinkle is that the same Steam store entry also carries the Massively Multiplayer genre tag, which sits awkwardly next to a four-player cap. Both are official, and the developer has not explained the discrepancy.
- Squad size: up to four players, or solo
- Options: follow the story campaign, or just explore together
- Communication: in-game chat, and Steam flags the game as including interactive elements
- Genre tag: Steam also lists Massively Multiplayer alongside the four-player limit
- Not confirmed: dedicated servers, mod support, and any per-server player cap beyond four
The Steam genre tags include Massively Multiplayer while the developer caps co-op squads at four. Both facts are on the same store page, and nothing has been published about whether the larger scale arrives later. Do not assume either number is final.

How many players can join a co-op session?
Four, according to the developer. That figure comes from the game's very first public announcement, the April 2026 post that introduced the project, and it has not been revised since. The Steam feature list is consistent with it, listing single-player, multiplayer, co-op and online co-op as supported modes rather than promising a large server population.
Four is a comfortable number for a survival game where the loop is scavenging, building and defending, and it also matches the way the game is framed in the press, where Online: 404 is consistently described as a co-op open-world survival title. The tension is entirely with the genre tag rather than with the developer's own words.

Do you have to follow the story in co-op?
No. The store page presents two ways to play side by side: follow the story campaign, or simply wander around the district together. That second option matters more in Online 404 than in a typical survival game, because the district is roughly four square kilometres of forest, lakes, wetlands and hills with a town and a lot of points of interest inside it, and finding those places is easier with three other people than with none.
The same page is also clear-eyed about the setting. The district was sealed off years ago and never fully evacuated, and the people who stayed lost their minds and now wander the area. Whether the answers to that are handed out through the campaign or assembled from what you find is not something the developer has detailed yet, even though the Early Access launch will include the full story. The Online 404 map page covers what is actually known about the area.
Is Online 404 really massively multiplayer?
The Steam data lists Massively Multiplayer among the genre tags for app 4094350, which is what an outside reader would normally take at face value. It sits next to a developer statement capping teams at four, and the store page also carries a co-op emphasis, so the tag looks like either a category left over from an earlier plan or a signal of something not yet explained.

Nothing has been published that resolves it. There is no statement about larger sessions, no mention of a player cap beyond the four-player team, and no roadmap. Until the developer says otherwise, the safe reading is that the confirmed, documented multiplayer is a four-player co-op, and that the genre tag is a Steam metadata field that has not been reconciled with it.
Are there dedicated servers or mod support?
Neither is confirmed. A server hosting site lists dedicated server and mod support for the game as not confirmed, and that is the only public information on either subject. No server browser, no hosting guide and no modding documentation has appeared from the developer, and Cornfield Games has not published an official website, only a Steam page and a Discord server.
That leaves an open question rather than a no. Small teams frequently add hosting and mod support after launch, and Online 404 enters Early Access on October 16, 2026 with plans to keep updating, so either could arrive later. For the launch itself, assume you are grouping up through the game's own systems. Our Online 404 FAQ covers the platform and launch questions that decide who can play at all.
More Online: 404 Guides
Online 404 launches October 16, 2026 in Steam Early Access on PC only. The date already moved twice, from July to September 25 to October 16.
The Online 404 smartphone is the core survival tool. There is no recipe book: you search an in-game web for answers while ads and CAPTCHAs get in the way.
Online 404 needs a DirectX 12 card and 16 GB of RAM. Minimum is an RTX 2060 or RX 5600 XT on Windows 10, with 60 GB of storage.
